In the beginning,
when all was not as it is now;
in the darkness,
when light was just a twinkle in the Creator’s eye;

when history was waiting to be born;
a new day dawned.

A day when the Creator shaped the universe
by the power of his living Word,
and the breath of his live-giving Spirit.
He spoke and called forth life,
he breathed and his spirit hovered over the waters,
he took dust and formed the foundations.
Creator, Word, Spirit.

The Holy Community,
working, living, being as one,
harmonized in love and purpose,
shaping, forming, gifting light and life.

Love without limit. Three and one, above us, beyond us, beside us, within.

Ways to Connect and Share

Memorial Day is our official national holiday remembering those who died in the line of service for our country. We pray for those who mourn the loss of loved ones in the line of duty, and we also lift up in prayer those who are currently serving. To honor those who have died, consider donating to an organization that helps families of veterans today. A few to consider are the USO and the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Do you have a child who is graduating from high school, college or receiving an advanced degree this year? Please notify the church office. We are planning to honor all grads on Sunday, June 13. If possible, please email us a picture! [email protected]

School is almost out for summer! Hephatha will continue the Youth Work program this June through August. Donations of non-perishable snacks and drinks for the youth can be made to Bay Shore Lutheran all summer (we will tell you when we can accept drop-offs to the office soon—until then, do not drop off food at the doors, thank you!). Also, monetary donations are being collected to provide scholarships for the participating youth. $300 sponsors one youth for the summer. Indicate Hephatha Youth Work Scholarship on your donation. Thank you!

Altar Flower Sign up is back! A sign-up form has been created to sign up just the same as if we were in our gathering area! There can be two names (or more if you email the office separately) for each week that flowers will be in the church. Click on the link below to go to the sign-up sheet and when we get close to the day of your donation, Kate will email you for a dedication to be in the Beacon for the week. The cost of flowers is $35. You may send a check to the office marked “Altar Flowers.” This is one more step toward resuming our Bay Shore lives together!

Lutheran Summer Music Program has been a summer-camp tradition for high school youth who play instruments or who sing in a school choir since 1981. Each year, the camp moves from one location to another to showcase local ELCA colleges. This summer, it is at Valparaiso College in Indiana. It is a 4 week camp for high school to study an instrument or two with professional instructors, and/or sing in a choir with a professor or two from an area college. This year, the Greater Milwaukee Synod has scholarship funds to offset the costs, and our high school youth who are interested—we encourage you to apply. Pastor Sarah’s eldest daughter Amy attended LSM at Luther College in 2011. It was a great experience for her, and truly prepared her for “going away” to college after HS graduation. Readings for Sunday, May 30, 2021

First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-8

This reading narrates Isaiah’s vision of the Lord surrounded by angels. They sing “Holy, holy, holy,” a song the church sings at the beginning of the great thanksgiving. This liturgical text invites the church and all creation to sing in praise of God’s glory. That glory is God’s mercy toward sinners.

¹In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. ²Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. ³And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
⁴The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. ⁵And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
⁶Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. ⁷The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” ⁸Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

Psalm: Psalm 29

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. (Ps. 29:2)

¹Ascribe to the Lord, you gods,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
²Ascribe to the Lord the glory due God’s name;
worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
³The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders;
the Lord is upon the mighty waters.
⁴The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice;
the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.
⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
⁶the Lord makes Lebanon skip like a calf,

Second Reading: Romans 8:12-17

In describing the new life of faith, Paul refers to all three persons of the Trinity: the Spirit leads us to recognize that we are children of God the Father and joint heirs with Christ the Son.

¹²Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—¹³for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. ¹⁴For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. ¹⁵For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” ¹⁶it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ¹⁷and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Gospel: John 3:1-17

Jesus’ miracles prompt Nicodemus to visit him in secrecy. Jesus tells him about being born of the Spirit and about the Son who has been sent by God to save.

¹Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. ²He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” ³Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” ⁴Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” ⁵Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. ⁶What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ ⁸The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” ⁹Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

¹¹“Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. ¹²If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? ¹³No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. ¹⁴And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, ¹⁵that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

¹⁶“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

¹⁷“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

Greetings, my friends

Some weeks–it’s an easy task writing 300 words to share with your Newsletter email. And some weeks, it’s simply overwhelming.

This week, I had jotted down about 6 things I could highlight for you. I can’t omit any of them, but I also can’t write too long—I know that’s a hard pass for many of you. So instead, I’ll fall back on my 10th grade HS teacher’s good advice. Bullet points.

Expect a special email next week from the Church Office about the first in-person worship on June 6 at 9:30 a.m. It will be a glorious day to worship God together in our sanctuary.
This summer, we will have quite a few activities for all ages. We will have a monthly outside hymn sing, a church picnic on August 8, and more.
Next week, we will share our new open hours for the Church Office, which will open on June 8.
Kate invited our children to special Praise Plays beginning in June, and also encouraged them to invite “Flat Jesus” into their lives this summer. Parents and grandparents, take pictures of Flat Jesus and send them my way—what a fun way to splash our Facebook page.
Don’t forget we are collecting special offerings for the Hephatha Youth Scholarships. You can make a designated gift to the scholarships through the Church Office.

And finally, this weekend is Memorial Day. Inside our Beacon is an invitation to pray for families mourning the loss of our servicemen and servicewomen who died in the line of duty, and to consider donating in honor of those who died. I lifted up two charities that I have personally donated to in the past, but I am sure there are many others.

I’ll be honest, I miss my previous church on these civic holidays. The parsonage’s backyard was the church’s graveyard and in it were veterans from every war, every war, beginning with the American Revolutionary War. It was always humbling to walk the lines of graves from 1742 on—reading their names and giving thanks to those who died while serving. You may think this would be morbid, but it wasn’t and isn’t. We are a community of believers, both living and dead. It is good to give thanks and remember.

Pastor’s Wednesday Morning Bible Study continues on May 26 at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Sarah will walk through the main parts of Deuteronomy. Did you know? Jesus quotes the book of Deuteronomy more than any other book in the Bible? It is worth reviewing! Following the study of Deuteronomy, Pastor Sarah will walk through the Letter to the Hebrews. Join us as you are able. You will be surprised how much you learn!

Prayer of the Week

On this Pentecost Sunday, we ask that you breathe on us once again. Make our consciences tender to your touch. We hunger for the life-changing power that your Holy Spirit brings. May our lives exemplify the fruit of your Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. May we use the gifts of the Spirit that you have distributed to bless the church and build your Kingdom on earth.

Lord of Power, just as the outpouring of your Holy Spirit on Pentecost so drastically changed the lives of the disciples, may the burning fire of your Holy Spirit refine and renew us, so that we will never be the same. May we move in the power of the Spirit, and may our lives and ministries be infused with your divine touch and love. May the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation cause us to grow in our knowledge of you. Amen

A Special Word from Pastor Mary Martha

Hephatha young men who abide in God’s love as they tend the church yard and the yards of several elderly neighbors. Wonderful young people! We thank God for them…and for you!

THANKS FROM HEPHATHA to you, dear mission partners, for continuing to serve with us on 18^th and Locust in this time. We are thankful to be able to continue in safe mode in numerous ministries, both in a limited capacity on site and in a growing capacity online. Please visit us at www.hephatha100.com .

From John 15: “Abide in my love.” WE THANK YOU for abiding with us in the love of God!!!!

The summer will bring us another year of work ministry with the young people, a bit freer than last year. We are working hard against lead poisoning of children in our area (on the Hephatha census tract a full one third of children are lead poisoned). We are growing our Strong Baby Sanctuary ministry (some 120 children are covered by it at this time). Outdoor food outreach and indoor use of the fellowship hall in safe mode for distribution of basic items weekly to those who are experiencing homelessness are other ministries that you are helping make “go” in this time. We abide with you in the Gospel, in prayer and in the hope of the resurrection.

I will be on sabbatical this summer and extend my wishes to you for a summer of health, growth in faith, and times of enjoying the gifts of this season.

Readings for Sunday, May 23, 2021

First Reading: Acts 2:1-21

Originally Pentecost was a Jewish thanksgiving-type festival celebrated seven weeks after Passover. On this particular Pentecost, however, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the entire community of believers just as Jesus had promised and the scriptures had prophesied. Empowered by the Spirit, the entire community bears witness to God’s activity in multiple languages.

¹When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. ²And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. ³Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. ⁴All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. (Ps. 104:30)

²⁴How manifold are your works, O Lord!
In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

²⁶There go the ships to and fro,

Second Reading: Romans 8:22-27

By pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts, God gives us the promised first fruit of eternal life so that we await God’s future in hope. In the meantime, the Spirit also intercedes for us by carrying the prayers of our weak human hearts to God.

²²We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; ²³and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. ²⁴For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? ²⁵But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

²⁶Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. ²⁷And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Gospel: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

While speaking to his disciples before his death, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as “the Helper” and describes the difference the Spirit will make in their lives and in the world.

[Jesus said,] ²⁶“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. ²⁷You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

^16:4b“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. ⁵But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ ⁶But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. ⁷Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. ⁸And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹about sin, because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; ¹¹about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

¹²“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. ¹³When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. ¹⁴He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

From the Pastor, Pentencost, 2021

Happy Friday, Bay Shore!

As I announced last Sunday, the Council met on Zoom this past Tuesday and agreed to begin opening our building in June and to have our first in-person worship on June 6. We also agreed that, due to the risks to vulnerable adults and children who cannot be vaccinated at this time, we will wear masks for our worship services until further notice.

The above is simply 2 sentences, but behind it—a lot of prayer, patience, work, research, discussions, patience, frustration and hope. I am grateful we will be returning to worship on the 6^th of June. We will gather at 9:30 a.m. since this is also our summer tradition. This is truly a blessing.

In the meantime, I will be working with the staff now on the next steps. How will we gather? What will we do? What restrictions may there be? We are consulting with the Wisconsin Council of Churches, our local church neighbors and more. We also know, and I hope you do too, that worship will change every week as more people get vaccinated and as vaccines open up for children below 12 years of age. Think of it as a soft roll-out—not a blunt return to how we were on Sunday, March 8, 2020—our last time together. But also remember, on that Sunday, we refrained from Passing the Peace physically, and we discussed how we may have to worship on the 15^th—not knowing that we would be closing for so long. Frankly, I am so grateful to be in-person, I would gladly wear a hazmat suit at this point to do it.

For those of you who decide to continue distancing from others, I understand. The livestream service option will continue on YouTube. But instead of me looking straight at the camera, you will see me looking around and seeing others—praying for the day you too will return.

Please watch your email inbox over the next two weeks. We will share a lot of news with you all about our re-opening, our first Sunday back and more. This is an exciting time at Bay Shore—I feel like the Israelites with Joshua, after 40 years in the desert. The future may be uncertain, it may even be hard, but the promise of something new and better? It is enough to fuel our spirits.
