Why She Gives

  • November 23, 2019

Today's story of "Why I Give" comes from Pastor Mary Martha from Hephatha Lutheran Church.

Why she gives:

A woman of Hephatha wondered to me out loud about something she imagined: what would it be like to give her last dollar. Before she died, she wanted to do this. Reflecting on the biblical story of “the widow’s mite,” this woman, who had only a few mites, imagined what it would be like to part with her last dollar. Her goal? To know what it really felt like to “give it all”—and to trust that God’s provision would still stand.

This woman is now deceased and was one of the more generous persons I have come across in my life. I saw her give away medication, I saw her give away food, I saw her give away one or two of her last few dollars. Close enough, I think, to the final dollar—I saw her give it all in order to respond more fully to God who gives all. I imagine she now finds herself filled to overflowing, seeing God face to face, living in that new realm where imagination gives way to heavenly reality.
