Friends,
You are invited to join a long-standing tradition at Bay Shore in a new way, on Saturday, November 9, when we have our special “Sleep Out Saturday.” This year, with an intentional emphasis on how we can share this event with all seven generations, we will have a Stone Soup Supper, from 5-7 p.m.
Sleep Out Saturday began at Bay Shore in fall of 2011, as a way of bringing awareness to the issue of homelessness in Milwaukee. Youth build shelters out of cardboard and spend the night outside on the church side lawn. Information is shared and we have discussions about the homeless in Milwaukee, as well as readings from the Bible which help us connect Jesus’ teachings to the issue. Bay Shore’s custodian, Dan Noble, will come and spend time with the group as well, sharing his experience about being homeless. This year, all financial donations will go to MacCannon Brown Homeless Sanctuary in Milwaukee. Dan shared that this was the first place he turned for help, and they provided assistance and connections which helped him get a solid foundation by finding jobs and housing.
This year, Sleep Out Saturday is expanding with an invitation for all to a Stone Soup Supper, beginning at 5 p.m. This is a way for all ages of the Bay Shore congregation to connect as a faith community, as well as create a wonderful opportunity to invite the surrounding community. Flyers will be shared with neighbors about the event, there will be signs in lawn, and the shelters themselves on the church lawn will bring awareness to the issue.
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to invite your neighbors.
We will gather for a meal – soup made from vegetables that each person/family brings. We will read Stone Soup and experience what literally happens when we come together as a community and share resources.
* Join us for a warm soup meal at 5 p.m. (bring your favorite veggie to cut up and add to the soup!)
* Support the youth as they build their shelters
* Consider donating to MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary to help our brothers and sisters who are without homes
Join us at the 10 a.m. worship on Sunday, November 10, as the youth share about their experience during Children’s Time and also during Children’s Faith Formation.
