Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
A Small Needful Fact by Ross Gay
Is that Eric Garner worked
for some time for the Parks and Rec.
Horticultural Department, which means,
perhaps, that with his very large hands,
perhaps, in all likelihood,
he put gently into the earth
some plants which, most likely,
some of them, in all likelihood,
continue to grow, continue
to do what such plants do, like house
and feed small and necessary creatures,
like being pleasant to touch and smell,
like converting sunlight
into food, like making it easier
for us to breathe.

Ways to Love, Serve and Give
Have a Vegetarian Day! You don’t have to give up meat for life but try to commit to one meat free day a week. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a single pound of beef. And each hamburger that comes from animals on ex-forestry ground is responsible for the destruction of fifty-five square feet of forest.
Thank you for your continued to support of Bay Shore during this difficult time.
Our mission and ministries are funded solely on the offerings we receive. Please continue to mail your offerings to the church. Or, to make an offering online using a debit/credit card right now, you may do so here.

Financial Update for Bay Shore from our Treasurer:
Through August, regular giving is about 5% behind the budget, but the lack of rent from the day care space increases the total revenue shortfall to about 10%. Fortunately our expenses are also below budget, by about 12% (attributable primarily to some budgeted staff positions that were not yet filled and lack of in-person activities), resulting in a deficit year-to-date (about $23,000) that is less than we had budgeted (recall that we budgeted an operating deficit for the year of approximately $35,000). Assuming that regular giving continues on pace and that we do not incur any major unforeseen expenses for the rest of the year, we may expect to finish the year with an operating deficit somewhat less than we budgeted.
This deficit will be offset to a large degree this year (and this year only) by the Paycheck Protection Plan loan of $33,000 that we received under the CARES Act, which we expect to be forgiven before year-end. When it is forgiven it will then be included as revenue, bringing our year-end bottom line close to break-even. Remember, though, that this CARES Act money is a one-time subsidy that will not be available next year or thereafter, without which we would experience a substantial deficit for the year.

Prayer of the Week: Prayer by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Ever present God, you called us to be in relationship with one another and promised to dwell wherever two or three are gathered. In our community, we are many different people; we come from many different places, have many different cultures. Open our hearts that we may be bold in finding the riches of inclusion and the treasures of diversity among us. We pray in faith. Amen
A few reminders
This past Sunday, we began our Stewardship Appeal for 2021 with the announcement of our theme, Moving Forward with Faith. Over the next few weeks, you will receive information about this appeal in your home mail, and also through the Beacon and during worship. Because we know you will have questions, the Stewardship Committee has scheduled two upcoming “focus groups.” Bay Shore also has some other exciting events happening the next two Sundays. We have included a list below.
Sunday, October 18 — Worship on Zoom at 10 a.m. and our first Focus Group will immediately follow.
Sunday, October 25 is Reformation Sunday. Like Gospel Sunday, we will have a pre-recorded worship service uploaded to our YouTube channel for you to watch at your convenience. On Sunday, we will have a Zoom Focus Group from 10-11 a.m. We will also, in honor of the day, have Holy Communion offered in our parking lot from 11-noon.
