Fifth Sunday of Easter
“ALFA”
by Gina Minks Toddings
Love has found me many
times during this lifetime.
Hopelessly besotted and
rocked to the core…
But the love I have for
my children is the only
love that split my soul
with each birth, and still
miraculously multiplies
with each year I am
their mother.

Remember in Prayer, or send a card to members and friends convalescing and/or homebound, especially:
We will share names each week of folks who would appreciate a card from our Bay Shore family…
- Kathy Kannass (mother of Pastor Mary Martha) 18050 Redvere Dr. Brookfield, WI 53045 Kathy was hospitalized this week with medical issues unrelated to COVID-19, however still serious. What a nice surprise it would be to be welcomed home by cards from her Bay Shore family!
Ways to Learn and Grow from Home
This Sunday’s scripture lessons are…
First Reading: Acts 7:55-60 Stephen was one of the seven men chosen by the apostles to serve tables so that the apostles could be free to serve the word (Acts 6:1-6). Stephen does more than distribute food, however. For his preaching of God’s word, he becomes the first martyr of the faith.
55But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56“Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.
Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16
1In you, O Lord, I seek refuge; do not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me.
2Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me.
3You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake lead me and guide me,
4take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my refuge.
5Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
15My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.
16Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.
Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:2-10
Christ is the cornerstone of God’s saving work and the foundation of our lives. We are God’s chosen, holy people who continuously celebrate and declare the mercy of God we experience through Jesus Christ.
2Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
4Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in scripture: “See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner,” 8and “A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Gospel Reading: John 14:1-14
On the night that he is to be arrested, Jesus shares final words with his disciples. As the one through whom God is known, he promises to go before them and act on their behalf.
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.
4And you know the way to the place where I am going.” 5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.
12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

Ways to Serve and Give
Want to give and assist those in need now? While Hephatha Lutheran is closed, its community is reaching out to many agencies in the area. You can also give to Outreach for Hope, which not only provides assistance to Hephatha but many others in our community. You may help them here.
To assist globally, Lutheran World Relief is on the front lines in many places across the globe. You may help globally here.
Another place that can use our help locally is Hunger Task Force.
Click here to donate Directly to HTF.
More ways you can help!
Take some time over the next days and weeks to consider how you might show your appreciation to even one of these people. Call up your local police department and ask if they’d be willing to accept a delivery of a few pizzas as a small token of your appreciation (this helps out your local pizzeria, too!); encourage your market to allow cashiers to put out tip jars for the duration of the pandemic; put a box of goods (or goodies) next to your front door with a message thanking delivery people and encouraging them to help themselves; connect with your favorite bars and restaurants and set up a virtual tip jar spreadsheet (a simple spreadsheet with names and Paypal/Venmo information for hosts, servers, cooks, baristas, bus boys, etc.) so you can still offer a tip and help support one of the hardest hit industries. Remember, if any of these gestures involve the exchange of actual, physical money or goods, you’ll need to make sure that everything is hygienic, safe, and clean.
Bay Shore continues to receive mail and receives offerings. We will collect our mail every Monday from the post office. Please continue to send in your offerings if you are not signed up for Simply Giving. It’s not too late to sign up for Simply Giving. Call Kate Yelvington, our Parish Administrator, at 414-232-1012 to sign up! We appreciate your support of Bay Shore during this difficult time. To make an offering online right now, you may do so here.
It is a joy to see so many offering envelopes mailed to the church and we are grateful for all of them. We need your support now more than ever, and we are grateful for your responses. Thank you for your generosity.
Do you knit, sew or crochet? Do you need a project to do while at home? We have patterns for baby hats, baby blankets, PPE masks, and more available. If you would like to get more information, please email Pastor Sarah here, or Demaris Kenwood here. They can send you links and patterns.
AND Karen Nelson has yarn and needles at her house that she is willing to prepare a bag for you pick up from her front porch. You can reach out to Demaris or Pastor for patterns and Karen for the materials. To get your supplies, call Karen Nelson at (414) 962-1106.
Our partner church, Hephatha Lutheran is still planning a version of their summer work program for youth. Kids that participate will be awarded a gift card for school clothes at the end of summer.
If you would like to sponsor a student in the program, a full sponsorship is $300, full or partial sponsorships are gladly accepted! Last year we raised $1,500. This year we are challenging ourselves to raise $2,100. We will keep you posted on our goal! Make your check payable to Bay Shore with work ministry in the notation line.
Do you have a child who is graduating from high school, college or other advanced degree this year? Please notify the church office. We are planning to honor all grads on June 7. If possible, please email us a picture! [email protected]

Prayer of the Week: A Prayer for Moms
For the Moms who are struggling, to those filled with incandescent joy.
For the Moms who are remembering children who have died, and pregnancies that miscarried.
For the Moms who decided other parents were the best choice for their babies, to the Moms who adopted those kids and loved them fierce.
For those experiencing frustration or desperation in infertility.
For those who knew they never wanted kids, and the ways they have contributed to our shared world.
For those who mothered colleagues, mentees, neighborhood kids, and anyone who needed it.
For those remembering Moms no longer with us.
For those moving forward from Moms who did not show love, or hurt those they should have cared for.
We thank you God for the unyielding love and care for others we call ‘Motherhood,’ wherever we have found it and in whatever ways we have found to cultivate it within ourselves. Amen
