Third Sunday after Pentecost

Only a Dad

By Edgar Albert Guest

Only a dad, with a tired face,

Coming home from the daily race,

Bringing little of gold or fame,

To show how well he has played the game,

But glad in his heart that his own rejoice

To see him come, and to hear his voice.

Only a dad, with a brood of four,

One of ten million men or more.

Plodding along in the daily strife,

Bearing the pressure and scorns of life,

With never a whimper of pain or hate,

For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,

Merely one of the surging crowd

Toiling, striving from day to day,

Facing whatever may come his way,

Silent, whenever the harsh condemn,

And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad, but he gives his all

To smooth the way for his children small,

Doing, with courage stern and grim,

The deeds that his father did for him.

This is the line that for him I pen,

Only a dad, but the best of men.

Crazy Sock Father’s Day!

Readings for this Sunday, June 21

First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-13                                                                                            Jeremiah accuses God of forcing him into a ministry that brings him only contempt and persecution. Yet Jeremiah is confident that God will be a strong protector against his enemies and commits his life into God’s hands.

7O Lord, you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me. 8For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. 10For I hear many whispering: “Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. “Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him.” 11But the Lord is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. 12O Lord of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the mind; let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. 13Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers.

 Psalm 69:7-10, 16-18

7It is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face.

8I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother’s children.

9It is zeal for your house that has consumed me; the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.

10When I humbled my soul with fasting, they insulted me for doing so.

16Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.

17Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress—make haste to answer me.

18Draw near to me, redeem me, set me free because of my enemies.

Second Reading: Romans 6:1b-11

In baptism we were incorporated into the reality of Christ’s death and resurrection. We have been made new in Christ through his death and resurrection to live freed from sin.

1Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: Matthew 10:24-39

Jesus warns his disciples that their ministry in his name will meet with opposition. However, he assures them that they need not fear for the truth will come to light. Life is found in Christ.

24“A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! 26“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 27What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32“Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. 34“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. 37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

Ways to Grow Your Faith

Bible Study continues…

We gather on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom for our Pastor’s Bible Study. All are welcome, and no preparation and previous knowledge is required. If you have never sat in on a Bible Study with Pastor Sarah—you really should. Her love for Scripture shows, and it is exciting to learn more about the Bible in a very friendly way.

For the month of June and early July, we will walk through the varied life of David, King of Israel. Come and learn more about this complicated man.

On Sundays at 9 a.m., we have our Learning and Discovery class for adults. This is not your parents’ Sunday School class from years ago! We have deep discussions on topics and learn how current issues intersect with our faith journeys and beliefs.

Currently, we are discussing how to address social injustice in our community as well as other ways to advocate for the others.  You are welcome to join us, even if you never have before.

Women of the ELCA is a national, lay led group of all the women who are members in our denomination.  They have their own magazine, Gather, and also have bible studies all across the country.  During COVID-19, they began offering it online via Zoom.  You are welcome to join in and see what it’s like.  All are welcome. You can download the study at  https://www.gathermagazine.org/

We are always seeking ways to connect our families into worship. After much discussion within staff and Building & Grounds, we will be creating a “pray-ground” space (click on Pray-ground for more information) in the back of our sanctuary this summer.  It will allow families with young children to stay in worship while also allowing more room for young ones to sit, read, and play quietly.

To be more accessible for members, we also will create a center walk-through on the south side of the pews. This will allow people to walk through the new aisle to get to the northside pews without walking in front or looping all the way around to the front doors. So, if you are late to service, you can easily enter and sit wherever you desire without walking in front of the altar/lectern.

To do these efforts, we will be removing pews. The Building and Grounds is offering the pews to our members before we find alternate homes. If you would like a pew from Bay Shore, let us know soon.

A special request from Pastor Mary Martha at Hephatha Church:

Dear Partners,                                                                        We have a member who will be having a knee replacement in summer—she has been through a lot. She had COVID 19, she was working at Miller during the mass shooting on Ash Wed., she has lupus…..and we would like locate for her an exercise option — a stationary bike or elliptical machine that someone has but does not use and would like to share in this time. Thank you for serving God with us. God’s peace and love to you all, Mary Martha (please contact the office at Bay Shore if you have a bike!)

Ways to Connect and Share

Join us on Sundays for our Virtual Coffee Hour immediately following our worship service.

Stay online and chat with friends. We will have small group break outs for more intimate fellowship, and we will also have conversation starter questions, too. We hope to create a virtual time like our “coffee fellowship” was on Sundays when we were in the building.             Stay, drink a cup of coffee, and reconnect with friends.

Prayer of the Week: Prayer for fathers

We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives.

Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that

some fathers excel while others fail.
We ask for Your blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed.

This Father’s Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways–both big and small–they lift children to achieve dreams

thought beyond reach.

So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent; grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches and the women of our families.

For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do well by their children and by You.
In Your Holy name, O God, we pray. Amen.
