Second Sunday after Epiphany

Hope Is in The Seasons

by Makayla Flower

Hope is in the spring time,
When the first bird of the year chirps.
When the first bud opens,
And the sweet perfume of flowers is in the air.

Hope is in the summer time,
When the sun shines bright in your eyes.
When the lakes sparkle and shine under the sun,
And when there’s laughter in the air.

Hope is in the fall time,
When the leaves fall off the trees,
And crunch under your feet when you walk on them.
When birds fly away to find a warm place to stay.

Hope is in the winter time,
When a blanket of white covers everything.
When everyone’s happy and cheerful,
And when you build forts, snowmen, and have snowball fights.

Hope is in the seasons,
When the first bird chirps,
When the sun is bright in your eyes,
When the leaves fall off the trees,
And when a blanket of white covers everything.

Ways to Grow and Learn

6 Weeks, 6 Big Words

Our Wednesday Morning Bible Study convenes at 9:30 a.m. Our theme for the weeks leading to Lent will be “6 Weeks, 6 Big Words.”

We will study 6 words that are common theological mind-twisters. Each week will be a new word. This week: Righteousness. All are welcome to join as able on Zoom, link is in the calendar listing.

Beginning this week, the Troubling the Waters group will resume the journey to understand our role and the church’s role in the ongoing racial discord that characterizes present-day America.  We invite all of you to join us.

First, we will listen on-line to Reggie Jackson discuss “Do Black Lives Matter?” on four successive Tuesday evenings and then together reflect on those presentations the following Thursday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m.

Tuesdays, January 19-February 9, 2021 at 6-8 PM

The Shorewood library will sponsor 4 presentations on successive Tuesday evenings by Reggie Jackson through Zoom. They will be focused on different facets of the maltreatment of African Americans throughout history. Registration through the library is required.

We will plan to watch these presentations on Tuesdays and then meet informally on the following Thursdays (January 21-February 11) for discussion in relation to Troubling the Waters.

Tuesday, January 19th: Do Black Lives Matter? Introduction to the Historical Devaluation of Black Lives please remember to register!

Tuesday, January 26th: Do Black Lives Matter? The Devaluation of Black Lives in Politics and Law

Tuesday, February 2nd: Do Black Lives Matter? The Devaluation of Black Lives in Science and Medicine

Tuesday, February 9th: Do Black Lives Matter? The Devaluation of Black Lives in the Criminal Justice System

From January 18-25, Christian Churches across the globe will participate in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

More will be expressed about this on Sunday during worship, but daily readings and prayers will be shared on our Facebook page beginning Jan. 18—including links to worship services celebrated around the country for this special week.

Next Soup’R Books — Breath from Salt, on March 7

The Next Soup’R Books discussion by Zoom will be held on Sunday, March 7 at 4 pm. The book is Breath from Salt: A Deadly Genetic Disease, a New Era in Science, and the Patients and Families Who Changed Medicine Forever, by Bijal P. Trivedi.

Don’t be put off by the terribly long title! This book is fascinating and an easy read. It tells an engaging story of how an array of passionate people — medical researchers, philanthropists, patient advocates, and others — led a campaign to conquer cystic fibrosis, a previously deadly genetically-inherited disease. A feel-good story, proving that miracles can happen. (On the must-read list from Bill Gates).

Some books will be available, without charge. Please contact Kate for arrangements.

Ways to Love, Serve and Give

Our Social Ministry Committee is reviewing the idea of hosting a community wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to be held on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022 at Bay Shore Lutheran Church. While this seems far away, the event—which involves the coordination of multiple service project opportunities—will take months to plan. If we proceed, we hope to have service projects and invite our community to participate, including persons of all ages. If this interests you, please let Pastor Sarah know and we can add you to the special task force that will be working on this project.

In the meantime, this year, consider doing a service project of your own at home, or donate to a charity in our area that provides services to others.

Remember in Prayer or send a card to

 members and friends convalescing:

There can be two names (or more if you email the office separately) for each week that flowers will be in the church. Prayer of the Week

O God of steadfast love, trusting you, we devote our hearts to learning                                        and our lives to walking.
Teach us truth, that we may walk with courage.
Teach us mercy, that we may walk with humility.
Teach us forgiveness, that we may walk with compassion.
Teach us grace, that we may walk with strength.
Teach us wonder, that we may walk with praise.
Teach us goodness, that we may walk with those in need.
O God of steadfast love, learning from you, may we walk well. Amen

Readings for Sunday, January 17, 2021

First Reading: 1Samuel 3:1-10                                                                                                      At a time when visions are rare and unexpected, the Lord comes to Samuel and calls him to speak the divine word. Though just a boy, Samuel responds to God obediently, as Eli the priest has taught him to respond. This marks the beginning of Samuel’s prophetic ministry.

1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” 5and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and  lay down in his place. 10Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18                                                                                                                           You have searched me out and known me. (Ps. 139:1)

1O Lord, you have searched me and known me.

2You know when I sit down and when I rise up, you discern my thoughts from far away.

3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.

4Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.

5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.

13For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.

15My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

16Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.

17How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

18I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.

Gospel Reading: John 1:43-51                                                                                       In John’s gospel, Jesus’ ministry begins with the call of disciples, who then bring others to Jesus. Philip’s friend Nathanael moves from skepticism to faith when he accepts the invitation to “Come and see.”

48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
